Friday we arrived around rush hour and got in our rental Toyota Corolla after the fastest flight ever (only an hour and 10 minutes!) We got to the lower downtown district and were immediately awed by our hotel. It was a historic hotel that was undergoing some construction but beautiful nonetheless. AND they upgraded us to a bigger room and had chocolates and a nice note waiting for us in our room for our anniversary! Plus free wine and beer at happy hour! The room itself was small but nice and the bathroom was gorgeous. We had a top floor room.
We headed out for a night on the town. I had "packed" a really cute dress that never made it to my suitcase so I was bummed to wear my airplane clothes out, but it was ok since Zach loves my tribal necklace (not).
We spent the evening walking from place to place and enjoying whatever drink or food we wanted. The highlights for me were mason jar pickled shrimp (yum!) and Zach's Wynkoop Mile Hi Pale Ale, and Zach loved the Colorado style chile fries and seeing the taprooms in action.
Saturday morning was my favorite. We drove out towards the mountains to Red Rocks, an amphitheater and park. It was 73 degrees and sunny. The place was amazing. We did the 1.4 mile hike and got some gorgeous views and imagined life in Colorado. We both talked about what concert we would pay a million bucks to see at the venue. (Foo Fighters and Dixie Chicks). The amphitheater itself was full of people exercising and enjoying family days, so we sat and people watched for a good amount of time.
We headed back downtown for part one of yummy food day- a hot dog joint called Biker Jim's that specializes in hot dogs made of reindeer, rattlesnake, elk, duck, you name it. I died over my pheasant dog topped with blue cheese and bacon jam and Zach enjoyed his much more boring beef and bacon dog topped with cream cheese and fried onions.
After a long nap, we were back out on the street by dinner time. Zach picked a great pizza place and we had asparagus, prosciutto and egg pizza- Yum! We took a long hike to a different part of town and were glad to see Denver Beer Co, a taproom that reminded us of Minneapolis that was full of people and their pets! I bought myself a sweatshirt that I LOVE.
Then, we met my good friend Kayla at the YardHouse and it was so good to see her. Her boyfriend so strongly convinced Zach (who was many beers deep) to move to Denver that he spent the entire walk home talking logistics, and as we got on the elevator to the 9th floor, he asked, "so are we putting the house on the market this week?"
Sunday I was so bummed to see it was a blizzard outside. We didn't leave MN for snow! We drove around and found a nice brunch joint but neither of us were too hungry. Neither of us were wanting to drink any booze/beer either! We took the rental car back and waited several hours at the airport but had a good time reminiscing about the trip. I was so excited to get home to my bunny boy, and was glad the flight was short. I was also so happy to have started and finished! 2 books.
What we know about Denver:
1) lots of hippies
2) lots of craft beer
3) lots of beautiful scenery
4) crappy airport
5) just as crazy of weather as MN!
Meanwhile, back at the ranch, my mom and sis sent me the following pics:
