And unfortunately, they are the things that I know I will forget as he gets older. :( I already forgot what it felt like to sit in his glider and hold him when he was just a 22 inch long mushy baby. I can't remember how cute he was as a chubby, smiley 8 month old waking up 5 times per night. After a great weekend with Abe, I just wish I could bottle up feelings and the way he smelled and go back to them when I need a pick me up. This weekend was full of things I want to remember:
1) The way he is still quite cautious, despite being "wild." At class this weekend, there were other kids just loving riding a kiddie roller coaster. Abe refused to go near the thing. The same kids were climbing all over the climbing wall and running up the ramps at full speed. Abe looked at those kids like they were crazy, and proceeded to go on the small slide- over and over and over and over and over. It was safe! Finally, at the last minute of class, he climbed up the ramp with another kid. The pride on his face! He ran down triumphantly, and my heart swelled with pride. Later that night at the playground he was doing the same thing-sticking to his little slide, happy as could be. We have asked him a million times to go down the big slide, and he always says no. I don't know what got into him, but he started slowly climbing towards the big slide. He sat up there for awhile, then was going to climb down. After I said that I would ride with him, he scooted down the slide. It was like a lightbulb went off- "Hey, I like this!"
2) His little legs running as fast as they can. He still runs very stiff legged but he can run so fast! The best is when he thinks he is pulling the wool over our eyes and starts getting away. Once he realizes we are following him, he picks up his speed a bit and giggles so hard! That kid loves to be "ow-side."
3) "O-tay!" This is very new, in the last 2 weeks or so. If we ask him a question he will answer with a very enthusiastic "O-tay!" It kills me. I need to get a video of it. Especially if I ask, "Should I get you some <insert candy name here>?" He smiles, nods his head, and says "O-tay!"
4) Seeing him clap so hard at Disney at Ice brought real genuine tears to my eyes. I do NOT cry about such things. He looked so confused, yet so excited at Mickey Mouse skating around. When Goofy came out, he looked at me and said "Nuto!" (Pluto), like "Mom, can you believe this??" Everytime the scene changed he clapped and edged towards the front of his seat to get closer for the next scene. I wasn't anticipating any reaction from him and initially wasn't going to bring him, but I was in awe of his awe. It was very much a feeling of "Wow, getting to be a mom is so cool!"
5) How hard that kid can hug you when he doesn't want to go to bed yet. We have such a good routine going and sometimes at nap or bedtime, he will cling on to me like a baby gorilla. He wants more books and more kisses and more snuggles. It is the best feeling in the world. A friend of mine recently talked about The Last Time, as in there will be a time where Abe sits on my lap and allows me to rock him and then carry him to his bed, and it will be the last time I ever do that. Makes me want to hold onto him longer even when I know he needs to go to sleep.
Other good memories from our busy weekend:
* Watching Abe go nuts over the mini cupcakes Shawn and Cass brought him Friday night. Spending the evening brewing beer with our buds!
* Abe being so excited to see "Yiwwy!" and give Auntie her birthday present.
* Abe entering his new classroom and dumping out every box of trinkets he could find. I spent the first 20 minutes of class chasing him and picking up Legos, crystals, dried noodles, etc.
* Seeing that Abe still has a love affair with AJ. He wanted to sit by her at Disney on Ice and touch her hand and be right next to her. When we left he just kept looking behind us, saying "Jay-J?"
* Abe RUNNING to Daddy with his bag of popcorn after the show. He was screaming pop-pop! and it spilled all over the carpet.
